We all have our favourite seasons right? And maybe fluffy socks and open fires are your favourite thing. But winter can be a tricky time of year for some of us. Here are some yogi lifestyle pointers that might just help you during the winter season.

1. Grounding
As the days grow shorter it can feel difficult to shake off any difficult feelings of darkness, particularly as time outside in the daylight might be limited. This contributes towards us feeling a little more disconnected from nature and our natural rhythms. But the good news is, it is the perfect time of year to integrate grounding practices into your life or movement habits to help you feel more connected to nature and in turn a little more centred.
How about using the 'wintering' season to include more grounding shapes into your yoga practice - try asanas such as Downward Facing Dog, Childs Pose, Mountain Pose, Pyramid Pose or a juicy long hold in a forward fold. Pair this with some deep and mindful breathing and notice how much more grounded you feel afterwards!
2. Walking meditations
There is nothing better than wrapping up warm and getting outside for some gentle movement on a cold winters day. As you walk and your feet connect to the earth focus on your senses in turn to help your body absorb the wonder around you. What can you see, hear, smell, feel?
This doesn't need to be a 5 mile trek, just taking 10 minutes outside to get some fresh air and intentionally notice the joy Mother Nature around you is often enough to lift your spirits. Followed by a hot chocolate of course.
3. Taking time for reflection
Winter is a perfect time to focus your attention inward. Perhaps asking yourself how you are feeling? Without challenging the answer just notice what comes up for you. If the winter months are bringing up some uncomfortable answers to that question then shift your focus to what would best NOURISH you instead of what depletes you. Remind yourself that the answer to these questions may change on a daily basis but the best way to support your wellbeing at this time (and any time of year) is by honouring the answer and acting on it with love and kindness for yourself.
So whatever it is that would nourish you - go do that and notice how much more empowered you feel to do the same tomorrow.
4. Daily Routine
Engaging in consistent daily routines can help you to feel more motivated and moving more mindfully from one day to the next with a positive feeling of productivity. This does not mean you should set yourself a crazy to do list each day or try to build unsustainable habits. Just create yourself an easy to follow, healthy routine to keep your mind focused and your body regulated throughout the winter. Small consistent habits actually help our nervous system to relax creating a sense of ease and comfort within the body.
Remember that the winter months are a gift. A season of slowing down that prepares us for the season of flourishing in spring. So instead wishing them away try some of the tips here to help you 'winter well'.
